New York and the NBA, a basketball story
by La Newyorkina
Knicks and Nets are today the two franchises representing New York in the best basketball league in the world. The former is the most valuable team in the league, with a value of more than 3.6 billion dollars.
The two New York franchises compete in the Eastern Conference and in the Atlantic Division, one of the most powerful today along with the young and reborn Philadelphia 76ers, the renewed Toronto Raptors with Kawhi Leonard as star and the Boston Celtics who aspire to everything this year.
Lebron James' move from Cleveland to the Western Conference with the Lakers, who have been in the doldrums since Kobe's departure, leaves the Eastern divisions with a much more open road to the playoffs. New York teams will try to take advantage of the situation to feel competitive again.
New York Knicks, always loyal to the city of skyscrapers
Founded in 1946, it is one of the two franchises that has always been loyal to its hometown along with the Boston Celtics, and through its ranks have passed some of the best players in NBA history such as Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Patrick Ewing, Amar'e Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony. All of them have been All-Stars several times and had extraordinary careers.
Among these mythical NBA players, the great Knicks fan will surely put "Clyde" Frazier Jr. and Willis Reed at the top of the list. Undoubtedly the architects of the only two NBA championships, 1973 and 1979 seasons, in the Knicks trophy room.
Patrick Ewing is one of those great historical NBA players who was not able to win a ring. His only mistake was to coincide in the era of a certain Michael Jordan who with his Chicago Bulls left few options to the rest of the franchises. He also lost finals against Rockets and Spurs, in these cases Olajuwon in Houston and Duncan in San Antonio left him without the option of being champion.
The last great star to step on the Madison floor wearing blue and orange was Carmelo Anthony, but without great results in the team. He was the top scorer in the 2013-2014 season, surpassing Durant and Lebron.
Currently everything is focused on Porzingis, the Latvian center who with only 23 years has become the hope for a Knicks that will seek to enter again in the playoffs. Something that has not happened for 5 seasons.
Brooklyn Nets, from New Jersey to New York City
The Nets were born in 1967 in the city of New Jersey and in 2012 they moved to the New York borough of Brooklyn. Their most notable successes in the NBA were the two finals played in the early 2000s, which they lost to Kobe's Lakers and Duncan and Ginóbili's Spurs.
If we look at their basketball history the first four names that will pop into our heads will be: Dražen Petrović, Vince Carter, Buck Williams and Jason Kidd. And undoubtedly, the key for the Nets to get to fight for the ring in 2002 and 2003 was Kidd, he lost both, but fate had a surprise in store for him: in 2011 in Dirk Nowitzki's Dallas Mavericks he would finally become NBA champion.
