Today, Diario Newyorkino takes a trip to Cantabria to visit a very special store in Torrelavega. We love New York but we also enjoy short trips, the scenery of the brave Cantabrian Sea and our neighboring provinces. So it's always a pleasure to take the car to visit David's store:
Graneles El Montañés.

Taking advantage of the trip, we have put ourselves in "journalist mode" and asked him some questions so that you can get to know him a little better and, of course, visit him when you are in Cantabria. Here we go:
How would you define Graneles El Montañés?
Graneles El Montañés is the evolution of the old grocery stores that abounded in every city a few decades ago. An evolution that leads us to offer healthy products that consumers demand today. In addition to offering quality food, many of them organic, we promote the philosophy of BULK where everyone gets what they need, no more and no less.
It is also common for consumers to bring their own containers and bags to carry the different bulks that can be found in our store; vegetables, flour, coffee, cereal.... The list is very long.
How was this project born? What was the germ of the idea?
The origin of Graneles el Montañés arose a few years ago in a small store in the heart of Aguilar de Campoo (Palencia). There the doors were opened with the aim of supplying its people with good products in bulk and recovering the essence of the grocery store, which had been lost after the introduction of so many supermarkets in towns and cities.
Later we moved to Torrelavega (Cantabria) where we were able to grow in size, offer and customers without losing our philosophy and essence.
What kind of products are most demanded by your customers?
In general, everything is sold, but if we had to choose 3 products, it would be sugar in its different variants, both the
whole cane sugar such as panela sugar; the
legumeThe main product, of course, is the star, as we try to give a lot of care to this product by offering it of national quality. There has also been an increase in the consumption of
organic fruit and vegetablesThe demand is increasing, especially for local or Km0 products.
Why La Newyorkina granola? What attracted you to this product?
We discovered
granola La Newyorkina walking around Gijón. We went into a store and tried it since we are fans of granola (we also have our own homemade granola). As soon as we tasted it we knew we wanted it at Graneles el Montañés.
You can tell it is not an industrial granola, the ingredients are perfectly identifiable and the final aftertaste is very rich.
How do you like to drink it? Any "secret" recipes?
The truth is that we are very classic when it comes to granola,
we like it with yogurt, or just on its own!
Which product from your store pairs best with our granola La Newyorkina?
I would say the organic and artisan yogurt from Granja La Sierra, or the Greek yogurt with strawberries from Casa Xanceda.
We would like to thank David for trusting granola La Newyorkina to offer his customers our handmade granola with Mediterranean flavor. And, of course, thank you for opening the doors of Graneles el Montañés and tell us a little more about this wonderful store. Be sure to visit them if you are in Torrelavega!
