I admit that it was difficult for me to start eating dates. Many times we eat through our eyes and dates are not exactly an attractive fruit (at least for me). But there were so many voices in favor of date consumption that, fortunately, I decided to give it a try. And I say fortunately because I liked their flavor and included them in my diet, and with them, I incorporated numerous benefits for my health and that is always good news.
What are the main benefits of dates?
Dates are
rich in antioxidantssuch as vitamin A, C and E. They are also a great source of B vitamins, such as B1, B2 and B3. It is also remarkable
their mineral content: potassium, magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, calcium, iron and sodium.
-
They help our heart. Dates are a cholesterol-free fruit with very little fat, so their consumption helps our body to prevent and fight cardiovascular diseases. They contain insoluble fiber that binds to fat and cholesterol, eliminating them from our body.
-
Better digestion. Its high content of soluble and insoluble fiber helps regulate our digestive system.
-
Nervous system. Potassium is a great ally of the nervous system and dates are fruits rich in potassium. Thus, their consumption helps us to reduce the risk of suffering a stroke or to prevent nervous disorders such as anxiety.
-
Iron supply. If you have low iron levels, dates will become one of your best weapons to fight anemia.
-
Energy at its best. They contain natural sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose, making them real energy boosters. If you have an active life and practice sports, you will see how the consumption of dates will give you that extra energy that your workouts need.
The health of your brain, your heart, your stomach and your nervous system will be favored by the consumption of dates. So these are more than enough reasons for you to start including them in your diet. Keep in mind that they are fruits with a high caloric intake, so, like everything else, in the right measure.
How to eat dates
Just like avocados, dates have recently become the fruit of choice. Their sweet taste makes dates the perfect candidate to sweeten your day without the need to consume other types of sugars. The easiest way to eat them is plain, although their flavor goes perfectly with both desserts and savory recipes. It is very common to find them in many cake recipes, but also as a topping for salads or as an accompaniment to red meat, chicken or fish dishes. What is the best way to introduce dates in my diet? Well, as you can imagine, I always consume them accompanying my different granola recipes. Mainly
as an added ingredient to my granola bowls.
