Although surf lovers wear their wetsuits and look for the best waves all year round, the truth is that the practice of this sport skyrockets in summer. Groups of small apprentices multiply along the shores of numerous beaches throughout the Cantabrian Sea, conquering (or at least trying) the crests of the best waves.
Surfing is a sport that, whether recreational or competitive, involves different parts of the body with varying intensity and duration. Both the exercises performed with the upper body (paddling) and those that affect the lower body (base position and maneuvers on the wave), involve a
large consumption of energy and therefore, in addition to technique, nutrition also plays a very important role.
The issue of nutrition is not trivial in any area of our lives, but it is even less so when we talk about sport.
A poor diet can have consequences such as the appearance of injuries, hypoglycemia that will cause early fatigue or dehydration. And these are just some of the problems you may encounter.
So,
it is essential that you eat well if you want to enjoy your surfing day. So, first golden rule:
never surf on an empty stomach.
But what to eat before entering the water?
The ideal is to eat foods rich in carbohydrates, both simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates produce energy that we can use quickly. For example, milk, honey, fruit juices or raisins. Complex carbohydrates are those that take longer to absorb and give us long-term energy. A day of recreational surfing can last a few hours, so it's better to have energy for a while, right? And when it comes to complex carbohydrates, cereals, legumes, rice and vegetables are the kings.
With this in mind, we recommend that before running out to the beach to catch waves,
have a good breakfast of fruit juice and a bowl of granola, yogurt with granola and fruit. Dairy, fruit, oatmeal and raisins. The perfect combination to spend long hours paddling towards the waves without getting tired. It would be a shame to have to get out of the water due to exhaustion, wouldn't it?
