Benefits of La Newyorkina granola.

Tomorrow is the last day of the year and also San Silvestre. If you like running, you are probably already getting your running shoes ready to take part tomorrow in one of the numerous races that are held all over the country. The first San Silvestre in Spain dates back to 1964 and is the well-known San Silvestre Vallecana. The race in this Madrid neighbourhood has become so popular that some say it is the best in the world, even ahead of the San Silvestre in São Paulo, a pioneer whose origins date back to 1924, after Brazilian journalist Cásper Líbero established it as a tradition in his country. As a curiosity, it is not that Pope Sylvester I stood out for being an excellent athlete, but that he died on 31 December 335 and the race takes its name from the Catholic saint's calendar. Saint Sylvester was not a runner. Well, having contextualised the most popular sporting event of the last day of the year, I will tell you that, if you run this race and, in general, if running is your favourite sporting activity, you should take a good dose of oatmeal. And who says oatmeal says granola La Newyorkinabecause that's why it's made from crunchy rolled oats that have been slow-baked in our bakery.

Why should you drink oats if you run the San Silvestre?

Oats are a cereal of high nutritional value. It is rich in carbohydrates (66%) that are slowly absorbed and easily assimilated. What does this mean? It means that the carbohydrates you assimilate with oats provide you with energy long after they have been absorbed by your body. So you avoid tiredness and fatigue when your body is desperately asking for glucose.

Benefits of oats for runners

We have already talked about its energising power thanks to its slow-absorbing carbohydrates, but oats also have many other benefits that make them indispensable in your diet (whether you run or not):
  • Protein. Oats contain six of the eight amino acids essential for life. It is the cereal that provides the most protein. Your muscles will thank you after a day's training. I know that on the 31st you feel like a plate of ham, but after the San Silvestre, don't forget to have a bowl of homemade granola.
  • Have you heard of avenanthramides? Yes, it's an unpronounceable name, as well as the unique antioxidant compounds in oats. Perfect for helping the body recover better after an outdoor workout, aka the San Silvestre race.
  • Relaxation. The components of oatmeal promote restful sleep. OK, so sleep probably isn't on your agenda for New Year's Eve, but if you're the type to start the year with another good workout first thing in the morning, an bowl of oatmeal after your run will help you to relax your muscles and get them ready for the day's session on day 1 - maybe you'll want to go for a swim at the beach!

After the San Silvestre, prepare a good bowl of La Newyorkina granola.

That said, if you're going out for a run to say goodbye to 2019, when you get home and before preparing the grapes, have a La Newyorkina granolabowl . I suggest our classic recipeoat flakes toasted in the oven with Mediterranean ingredients.
