Since granola La Newyorkina was an embryonic project in our heads on the streets of New York, it was clear to us that we wanted our product, our granola with Mediterranean flair, to bring together the most natural ingredients. And we succeeded.
We created a masterful blend to which we invited the most distinguished ingredients. The best extra virgin olive oil from Spain, the tastiest almonds from Valencia and, of course, the exquisite Asturian honey, our
landrina that we love so much and whose seal could not be missing in our granola.
Specifically,
honey La Puela de Pola de Allande. Today, our New Yorker Newspaper travels very close to our native Oviedo to dazzle you with one of the corners of our region.
Imagine a small town of 2000 inhabitants. Imagine a territory declared a Protected Landscape for its natural value, its forest wealth and its millenary yew trees. Imagine the green forests of our Southwest of Asturias. It is in this fairytale setting where the honey that bathes our rich granola is harvested.
Asturias is a region with a great beekeeping tradition. Around 400 tonnes of honey are produced annually and approximately 25% of this production is marketed under the quality brand 'Alimentos del Paraíso'.
Miel La Puela has earned this evocative surname on its own merits. And let's not kid ourselves, a product whose calling card is the very honourable title of "Alimentos del Paraíso" has to be very, very good. It is, in fact.
Its history dates back to 1941, when Mr. Carlos Flórez Lorenzo, known as "the priest of the bees" awakened in Alfonso Pérez (founder of the brand) an interest in beekeeping. The boy who signed up for a beekeeping course with the priest of the bees grew up and made his hobby his profession and, over the years, his children's profession as well. Today is the day when La Puela honey has become an innovative company with international projection that continues to take care of its products and its design with the same care as on the first day.
Do you know how honey is made?
The process begins with harvesting in the hives' combs. Then, when the honey is ripe, it is uncapped, i.e. the wax and honey are extracted and placed in an extractor which, using centrifugal force, extracts the honey. The product obtained is filtered and decanted for a few days to remove impurities, sediment and air bubbles. The honey is then ready for storage.
Honey properties
Without a doubt, honey is a delicious foodstuff full of properties and benefits for our health. For example, natural honey promotes sleep recovery. By drinking honey before going to sleep, we stimulate relaxation and sleep. Why? The natural sugar contained in honey causes insulin secretion, allowing tryptophan to enter the brain and triggering the secretion of melatonin, a hormone essential for regulating sleep.

Due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, honey is ideal for stimulating the immune system. It also reduces stress, regulates blood sugar levels and helps to absorb and fix calcium in the body.
La Puela honey is a honey with a great tradition, as well as being one of our most international honeys. With more than 900 hives in the Allande council, it is a source of wealth and employment in the region.
At
granola La Newyorkina we are committed to the highest quality ingredients and trusted suppliers who take as much care of their products as we do of ours. That's why the fusion between our handmade granola and La Puela's natural honey guarantees a successful flavour.
